The book of Joshua mentions that Madaba and its neighboring areas were assigned to Jacob’s eldest son with Leah; Reuben: “Their territory was from Aroer, which is on the bank of the River Arnon (Al Mujib), and the city that is in the midst of the ravine, and all the plain by Medeba…. This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben according to their families, the cities and their villages” (Joshua 13:16-23).
